The pace is slower for sure. If you are still living in the frantic state of instant everything, then this pace won't work for you. The first thing to learn here in Belize is:
A. Patience
B. Keep a sense of humor in all things
C. Don't be afraid to ask for help.
My first full day here around January 14th, found me thinking I knew how to drive into the small twin towns of San Ignacio(SI) and Santa Elena (SE). It was a humbling first experience and I actually did not get into any fender benders somehow although I am pretty sure I had plenty of opportunities! My arrogant U.S. attitude said it will be simple, the reality is SI is full of one way streets but not full of one way street signs.
So glad the traffic cop helped me go the right way! In fact this same young man helped me a few more times to go the right way. Except I was on my own when I attempted to the wrong way on the Hawksworth Bridge, OMG! I made it 3/4ths of the way across going the wrong way and then a car and a bus came at me, they did not budge. I had to back all the way back and off the bridge!! I am awful at backing up! I just chilled and took my time.
I think I am getting settled now as far as the steps above go. Whew!
