What? You are doing what? Didn’t you just get there? Didn’t you totally shift from living in Dolores, Colorado on top of a hill with Paul to moving alone to Belize?? Now you say you just bought a house in Holiday, Florida? You are returning to the United States via driving, once more, through Mexico?
Yes, I am. And soon too. I leave May 27th, 2022.
Here’s a little info about the cottage I bought. It is small, about 950 sq. ft. It’s in a mobile home park that is dog friendly to all sizes of dogs. The park has a community swimming pool, activities and a large community hall with a lending library, pool tables and shuffleboard courts.
Here a few photos of Blues Skies Cottage, my new home.
Why? Several pretty good reasons but none of them are completely relevant to returning. I do love Belize, the diverse country and the diverse and wonderful people. I will leave a part of my heart here where I have been a brief resident as well as a visitor many times.
You, dear reader, still want the whys? Okay here are a few practical reasons:
1. Buying property here is beyond my income and buying power.
2. I have watched several ex pats fly back to Canada or the United States when a health care issue is serious. (I don’t have any health issues -just stating an important factoid.)
3. The rules for permanent resident changed in January, but I did not learn about this until March, 2022.
Yes, I could stay as a perpetual renter, but I don’t want to be so. I looked around the United States at where I might afford to buy, where there is no ice and snow to fall down upon, where there is water, where fires aren’t an everyday occurrence and came up with Florida of all places! Yes, they have hurricanes, yes to tornadoes, yes to flooding, but also yes to spectacular beaches, stunning live oak trees, affordable housing, and good friends scattered about in this state from Miami to Ft. Myers to Dunedin and now you’ll have me to visit in Holiday. Why not return to Colorado? Colorado is way too expensive to live in anymore. No, no returning to live with Paul is a non-issue.
Yes, their politics suck but I plan to join League of Women Voters which is suing the state for their redistricting sham and also be active in getting Val Demings to the Senate replacing that lame excuse for a senator, Marco Rubio.
Plus, close by, in Tarpon Springs is an active UU congregation and plus there’s a nature center nearby where I will take classes, go on field trips and perhaps volunteer. Outdoor activities are everywhere from walks in tall trees to hikes and bikes on nature trails on barrier islands, to snorkeling and kayaking and dog parks for my fur babies.
Angel is driving us back as we repeat the route we took down in mid-January.
